It's called Shockoe Bottom, and if you look up you see the massive flyover soaring high up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Concrete is pretty prosaic. The ancient Romans covered it with marble. They are said to bloom up and down the East Coast, but they are tropical and like warm weather.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Early Spanish colonists used them for their medicinal properties. I have seen them both on the North Carolina and Virginia side. They don't seem to be afraid of people, neither do they seek them out. I think I was trying to capture the sense of isolation you might feel viewing a painting by Edward Hopper. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(153, 255, 255);font-family:trebuchet ms;" &gt;There's a kind of beauty in austere loneliness, but I can only tolerate so much of it. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(153, 255, 255);font-family:trebuchet ms;" &gt;I went to the Hopper exhibit at the National Gallery in D.C. last year.
